My Mom originally bought a Sharper Image Ionic Breeze Quadra
for us when she had to stay with us at a house we were renting
a few years back. The carpeting was orange shag (can you imagine
the nastiness of what lurked in there after 30 some years??)
and the house had major water damage, leaving the walls filled
with mold. Our allergies were going beserk. When we turned
on the Ionic Breeze, I was surprised at how quiet it was.
Generally, you only have to wipe down the filter every week
or so. After 30 minutes, we decided to peek at it to see what
it looked like. The filter plate was COVERED with a black,
tar-like substance. I spent no time thinking what that goop
was, or I might have thrown up. Needless to say, we got the
2nd one half off for the upstairs. What a difference! We no
longer went around with racoon allergy shiners, and I found
that I woke up with almost no congestion anymore (depending
on the season, of course). Sharper Image also includes a free
bathroom air freshner that's about 10 inches long and plugs
right into an outlet. We tried a few other air filters, but
they either didn't work, or we had to pay a fortune replacing
the filters every few months. SI's Ionic Breeze may be more
expensive than other brands, but in this case, you get what
you pay for. At least you won't have to purchase replacement
filters. And our electric bill wasn't any worse than before
